A SALAD TOO FAR AND WE’RE BEING WATCHED

Max found his gigantic companion down by the river, washing himself. With the memory of what a single drop of water felt like fresh in his skull, he kept clear.

“Hey, when you're done with that, can you maybe read something on my stats screen?” Max asked him.

“Oh? Somethin' in another language?” Raeg replied, splashing the clear water into a particularly hairy armpit.

“Yeah,” Max said. “I figured since you could read my name...”

The big man bent over and dunked his beard into the water. Red blood stained the stream. “I don't know much except the swears, but sure,” he said. “I'll take a look, but then we gotta get somethin' to eat. I'm starved.”

“Actually, I picked up your stuff in the woods. There's some dried fish.”

“Oh good. I'll take that for sure. You didn't pick up my bowl and the two little bottles, did you?”

Max remembered. “Yes.”

“Great!” he said, standing up from the water with a splash big enough that Max took a step back. “I'm glad you got my oil and vinegar. I could really go for a salad.”

“I'm sorry?” Max asked.

Raeg looked hurt. “Salad. You know, greens, some nuts, maybe a little dried fish. It's delicious.”

Max just stared at him. This huge scary guy, covered in tattoos and scars, who murdered people with axes... was a salad guy?

“I don't expect you to understand, you're just bones!” Raeg said as he stomped through the stream toward Max's side of the bank, dripping wet.

“Ah... yeah. Unfortunately, your vinegar didn't make it.”

“Really?” Raeg said. “Damn!”

“Maybe we can get some more at a town somewhere?” Max asked.

Raeg shook his head. “Nah. All the towns around here are gonna be lookin' for me. I'm an escapee.”

Max nodded. This was not a surprise.

“And you're a damned skeleton. Nobody's gonna want to talk to you.”

Also unsurprising.

“Yeah... I guess I hadn't thought that far ahead.”

“Well, you better start because the people here are just as happy to make friends with a murderer as they are an undead like you, and you aren't a knight, even if you put that in your name. Words don't make it true.”

“No, you're right,” Max replied. His actions would though. In time.

“So what did you want me to read?” the big man asked, folding his muscular arms impatiently.

“Right,” Max replied, turning to show him his stats screen. “Can you even see this?”

The big man squinted, pushing Max's arm away a bit. Wait... was he far-sighted? How old was this guy?

“Can't read that,” Raeg said, pushing Max's arm away.

“Why?” he asked.

“High demonic. Can't read high demonic. Low demonic sure... best language for swearing by far. Funny as hell. But that there? I don't know what it means. I also don't know what's worse, that your stats are lower than a crippled child or that your class is brawler. The gods must hate your guts, boney.”

Max sighed. “You could say that.”

“What the hell is that spell? I've never heard of it. What does it do?”

“Uh.. it makes equipment fifty percent heavier.
